A repair/reinstall of Windows XP can be the last resort when you've got a really have a problem, like a major malware infestation. What I have found is you can't get the latest Windows Updates even after you've cleaned out the infection.
There are two ways to fix this problem. First, you can kick-start the file by re-registering it with the system. Launch a Command Prompt and enter these commands:
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
That stops the Windows update service, registers the file with Windows, and restarts the service.
Second, you can download and install a small utility called the Windows Update Agent. Depending on how long this problem has been going on, you may have a lot of new updates to install once you've fixed it. Go to windowsupdate.com, click Custom Install, and accept all of the critical and security updates.

The souped-up "mobile workstation," as Lenovo calls it, also comes with customers' choice of quad-core Intel Core 2 processors and Nvidia Quadro mobile graphics CPU with as many as 128 cores. It also comes with as much as 8GB of DDR3 memory and a pair of hard drive/solid-state drive bays for up to 960GB of storage.

Microsoft has issued an emergency patch for the IE vulnerability. It is relatively unusual for Microsoft to issue what it calls an "out-of-band" security bulletin and experts are reading the decision to rush out a patch as evidence of the potential danger of the flaw.

Browse for the %SystemRoot%\system32\hotplug.dll file (or just copy/ paste that path into the file name) and select one of the icons of your choice.

"I just encountered this and I am adding it to my knowledge bonnet. I thought you might like your bonnet a little fuller also. The user has been having windows updates failing for months and didn't notice for a while and ignored it for the rest of the time. Windows updates installed fine then asked for a reboot. After the reboot it tries to finish the update, fails and rolls back the updates. If you aren't watching you miss the message about the roll back and just think you have more updates unless you check the update log and see the failures. This worked perfect first try". Read on...
